For most of us, when we think about the Ark of the Covenant, we think about Indiana Jones, snakes, crazy chase scenes and the cute but evil little monkey. (And the end of the movie when that guy’s face melts). There’s actually more to the story. 🙂 The Ark of the Covenant was the main piece of “furniture” in the Tabernacle. There were other pieces that were very important as well; the laver, altar, the table of show bread, the lampstand and the incense altar. All these items had significance for the ones worshiping in the wilderness. Most of us don’t think about the Tabernacle because we have Jesus Christ! We tend to look past all the preparatory truths and get straight to the point. It’s okay. One can read the Old Testament and then relish the glories of fulfillment in the New Testament, OR, one can read the New Testament and look back on the amazing symbols and signs of the Old. Either way, the more you study the Bible, the more amazed, blessed and convinced you’ll be that the whole book is about knowing God through Jesus Christ with the assistance of the Holy Spirit. If you don’t really know much about the Tabernacle, I aim to change that on Sunday. The author of Hebrews assumed some prior knowledge of the readers and the rest of the letter makes more sense if you know what they knew. How did all that information in Exodus point to Jesus? What can we learn about Him in the symbols? What was the point of the Tabernacle anyway? Hebrews 9 awaits us.
