Did that get your attention? The idea that we can take something back and make it great again is not limited to political posturing. Sports teams that are in decline get new coaches or new owners that promise to bring back the glory days. Businesses that are slumping get a new CEO who promises increased dividends and greater market share. The idea of taking something back and making it great again is actually a hi-jacked Christian truth. Mankind was created in glory and for glory. Sadly, our inner lives were ruined by the fall. Pride and self-will have made us naked and ashamed. For thousands of years, God has been inviting us to renovate our inner lives so that His image can be restored in us. He even promises that glorification is our destiny as believers. But what about now? Can we make some improvements in our inner lives before we get to Heaven? Can we become the saints we are called to be before we die? Was Jesus giving us an impossible burden when He said, “Be perfect as your Father in Heaven is perfect?” If we are going to be the kind of people God designed us to be, we’re going to need two things. 1) We need a new heart. And, 2) We need to cooperate with Him to renovate our inner life. This is possible. Today we often call it spiritual formation or discipleship. In years past, it was referred to as progressive sanctification or simply, holiness. Whatever we call it, the intent of God is to make His image in us great again. Let’s join Him in that pursuit.
