Have you ever started looking for something and then found something that you were not looking for? That happens to me a lot. I’ll go looking for a tool or some other item and then find something else that is so interesting I’ll forget what I was looking for in the first place! That happened to Saul. He spent three days looking for his father’s donkeys and ended up at a banquet with the preferred cut of meat. That night the prophet/judge Samuel had downloaded a lot of information to Saul that he never dreamed of needing. His quest for the lost donkeys turned into an anointing to rule over the armies of Israel. What a turn of events! That’s not going to happen to any of us in the same way for the same reasons but there is something we should pay attention to in this story. I’ll frame it in the form of a question, what are we looking for? What are we seeking? It’s not wrong to search for lost donkeys, especially when your dad asks you to do that. However, if we spend our whole lives searching for lost donkeys, we might miss some things we should be looking for. Take a few minutes before the Lord and do some heart assessment, is what you are seeking what you really need?
