Holy, Holy, Holy

When we make gods in our own image, they tend to be like us with more power. When we make a god in our own image, we can change it, add to the number or even dismiss it as we please. Of course, making gods in our image is backward. According to the Scripture, we have been made in God’s image. However, looking at people right now, in their current state, it’s hard to get a clear picture of God. The “fall” describes the reason for this disconnect. While we retain the image of God in our essence, the fullness of God’s glory in us is tarnished, cracked and broken. Yet, He remains holy. That He is holy does not mean He is mad. It means that He is “transcendent over all creation, infinite in His supremacy, majesty and awesome glory; He is spotless as to His character.” (Baker) God is sinless and therefore wants His people to be like Him. He is healthy and as a good Father, He wants His kids (image) to be healthy too. His desire to remove sin’s penalty and power from His image is not because He is mad. His desire to bless us with His holiness is motivated by love—holy love! It’s not that we should be trivial or profane with God. He is a consuming fire! It’s not that we shouldn’t fear Him. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. It’s the beginning of a proper view of God that results in a proper view of ourselves and His intentions for us. Is God holy? Yes! And, His desire is to make us holy IN the Person and work of Jesus Christ our Lord. Run to Him!
