Faith is our Advent theme this week. I’ve been fascinated for a long time by the phrase “little-faith.” Jesus used that term when the disciples were afraid, doubting or uncertain about how to proceed. It’s an interesting Greek phrase. It means, “lacking confidence,” but “little” seems to mean that we need “more.” Would it be better if we had “a lot” of faith rather than a “little?” Apparently it’s not about the amount of faith. On one occasion, the disciples said, “Lord, increase our faith.” He didn’t say, “Good request, here’s more.” He said that if they had faith the size of a mustard seed, great things would be possible. It’s not the size of our faith, it’s the Object of our faith that matters. If we have faith in ourselves, we have our power. If we have faith in this country, we have the collective power of the nation. But there are some areas of life where we are not enough. In fact, Jesus said, “Without Me, you can do nothing!” Our confidence needs to be in the Source and Sustainer of life, He’s the One who has all the power. That doesn’t mean He will do whatever we believe He can do and want Him to do. It does mean that we can do whatever He asks us to do because we are synced up with His mission and His power. Believe Him, trust Him to do what He said He will do. Great things are possible.
