When I was the parent of young children, I often heard the idea that children who are allowed to be disobedient without consequences will struggle being an employee as an adult. Providing consequences when our sons were disobedient was a training step for their future life as “bread-earning” adults. I’d like to think that learning to be a good employee has been better for our sons and their families, and better for the organizations where they have worked. Christianity has provided many cultural benefits over the past 2,000 years. Admittedly, there have been failures, but there have been a lot of improvements to the overall life of a people. Just consider what we have learned in 1 Peter chapter 2 so far. What would a nation be like if most of the people were primarily of the holy nation of God’s people? What would life be like if those people denied fleshly lusts? What if those people did all they could to cooperate with authorities? What if every workplace was characterized by obedience to bosses because people were happy with the smile of God? Wherever life like that has been embraced, the opportunity for human flourishing has been available. Our culture cannot be changed from the top down. If the human heart is not subjected to and accountable to the One in whom we live and move and have our being, there will only be a fight. Let’s let our light so shine before mankind that people might glorify our Father in Heaven.
