You have an inner life. A soul. You are more than a body. Science teaches us what is good for our body, but Scripture is the best source for informing us about what is good for our soul. Some people struggle more than others with the body. Physical suffering is hard. Just managing pain and basic life function is a full time job for some people. But according to the Word, we are ALL engaged in a struggle for the health of our soul. In fact, there is a war against our soul. If you have seen Lord of the Rings, imagine a horde of orcs marching toward you. Each orc is a temptation to evil. Some days it feels like their numbers are without end! Temptation is common to all people. We battle temptations of all sizes, shapes and colors. Our text for Sunday reminds us that evil desires “war against the soul.” No wonder it’s hard, war is used as the illustration. The outcome of war is either victory or loss of life freedom. In other words, caving in to temptation not only has bodily consequences, our souls are affected! If we think we can sin without consequence, we are sorely mistaken. Every time we give in to an evil desire, we weaken our inner life. Conversely, every time we say no to an evil desire, we strengthen our inner life. When God reminds us to put off sinful habits, it is for our good. It strengthens our character and puts us “on the rock.” And, there is a secondary benefit, holiness is missional. A godly life is evangelistic. We’ll learn about some of these basic realities as we gather around the Lord’s Table this week.
