Big news this week! The President outlined a plan for the forgiveness of Student Loans. Of course, reactions have been mixed as we would expect. There are people who are angry, and there are people who are elated, and there are people who suggest “those people” should never have had debt in the first place, and it goes on and on. The subject of debt can become quite emotional. Some who have had the means to never have debt, scorn those who have had to borrow. Those who have had to borrow often had no other way out of the situation they were in. Debt wasn’t a frivolous choice; it was necessary for survival. To be “in debt” can be a real problem if repayment is not possible. Some have gone to prison; others have lost everything they had. Consumer debt (credit cards etc.) can certainly get easily out of hand and the verse that says, “The borrower is servant to the lender,” is empirically true. Whatever your beliefs and convictions about this complicated subject may be; debt illustrates a problem the entire human race has to deal with. Every human owes a debt that cannot be paid. Jesus made this very clear. Whether we owe a little or a lot, the scary truth is, we do not have the means to repay our debt. We are “in over our heads.” We needed Someone to come to our aid and forgive our debt in full. Our text in Hebrews is packed with good news for the sin-weary and conscience afflicted. This is one element of debt forgiveness that should cause the people of God to shout for joy!
