Identity Choices

We sure hear a lot about how people choose to identify these days. I think it is getting out of control. Men are men. Women are women. Humans are humans. Some things are simply not a choice. I was born a male so I identify as a male. I am a human so I identify as a human. It seems pretty basic. However, there are areas of life where I do have choice. This is illustrated all the way back in the book of Ruth. Ruth was born a Moabite in a family that worshipped the idol Chemosh. She made a decision to change who she identified with. She chose to identify with the God of the Jews and to make Naomi’s people her people. That was a big deal. She left her family, her culture and her gods to join the people of God, their culture, and to put herself “under the wings of the Lord God of Israel.” That kind of identity choice is actually an eternal one and one that all people today have a choice to make. Are we people under Adam and death or people under Christ and life? That identity choice is an eternal one. Choose wisely.
